Natural England, in collaboration with Defra and Databricks, is pioneering a groundbreaking approach to peatland restoration across England. By harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence and advanced data platforms, they are dramatically accelerating efforts to map, protect, and restore these crucial wetland habitats, which are vital for biodiversity, water quality, and climate regulation.
Natural England operates with two core objectives: fostering thriving nature for both people and the planet, and building robust partnerships for nature's recovery. The innovative 'AI for Peatland' project seamlessly integrates both goals, forging alliances across government with Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and with private sector leaders like Databricks. These partnerships are instrumental in the ambitious undertaking of restoring England's peatlands, which are not only vast wetland habitats but also critical reservoirs for a quarter of the UK's drinking water and home to rare species like sphagnum moss and grouse.
The scale of this restoration challenge is immense, covering the entirety of England. Traditionally, mapping such areas manually was a laborious and time-consuming process. For instance, digitizing an area the size of the West Pennines would typically consume a week of manual effort. However, with the Databricks platform's advanced AI algorithms and computational power, the same task can now be completed in less than a day. This represents a monumental leap in efficiency, translating into time savings of many weeks, potentially months, annually – a feat previously unimaginable without this technological integration.
Prior to this initiative, much of the work involved manually drawing out peatland features. The collaboration with Databricks has been pivotal in automating these processes, addressing a critical gap: the absence of a comprehensive national map detailing peatland features and, crucially, the location of peat dams. Peat dams are essential for restoration, as they help retain water, which is vital for peatland health. The urgency of this work is underscored by the fact that peatlands store more carbon than all other global vegetation types combined. When these ecosystems degrade, this stored carbon is released into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change; instead of absorbing carbon, they become emitters.
The project is not only a testament to technological innovation but also a powerful platform for advocacy.
