In an inspiring session at GROW ANZ 2026, Paralympic gold medalist and media personality Dylan Alcott shared his profound insights on what truly drives modern leadership: courage, vulnerability, and purpose. Alcott, a HubSpot customer and passionate advocate for disability inclusion, captivated the audience with his candid reflections on his personal journey and the transformative power of embracing one's authentic self.
Dylan Alcott's journey began with significant challenges, born with a tumor wrapped around his spinal cord that led to lifelong wheelchair use. He candidly admitted to a period of intense self-hatred and embarrassment about his disability, feeling like a burden due to societal narratives. However, through a process of self-discovery, he realized that these perceived differences were, in fact, his greatest strengths, transforming him into a "torchbearer" for those who came before and after him.
Alcott champions vulnerability as one of the most potent leadership tools. He argues that the era of stoic leaders with all the answers is over. Instead, the best leaders are those who work for their people, listen to their experiences, and co-design solutions, fostering an environment where teams can thrive, not just survive. This philosophy extends to his advocacy for disability inclusion, highlighting the immense economic buying power of 1.3 billion people globally, a market often overlooked by businesses.
His career transition from a world-renowned athlete to a broadcaster presented another challenge in authenticity. Initially, Alcott felt pressure to conceal his disability or present a "less disabled" version of himself on screen. A pivotal interview with Rafael Nadal, viewed by 150 million people, became a turning point, affirming the power of simply being himself. This realization, however, was part of a longer, 29-year journey to truly feel worthy of love and his disability, even amidst public success. He stresses the importance of intrinsic motivators – like supporting loved ones and making a difference – over extrinsic rewards like medals.
Alcott's core message revolves around the power of mindset: "It is not the events in life that dictates the life that you live. It's your decisions around the events that determines the path that you take." He practices this daily, focusing on what he can control. Through the Dylan Alcott Foundation and initiatives like Ability Fest, he actively invests in young people with disabilities, providing education, equipment, and opportunities, and running global awareness campaigns to shift perceptions and create a more inclusive world.
